7-Day DevOps Challenge
In this DevOps challenge, I'm learning about the core principles and practical implementation of Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) using AWS services. By the end of the 7 days, I will have built a complete CI/CD pipeline from scratch that automates the building, testing, and deployment of a web application. I'll gain hands-on experience with tools like AWS CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy, and CloudFormation, and I will have documented each step of the process to showcase my DevOps skills in a professional portfolio. This challenge will strengthen my understanding of cloud-based DevOps workflows and improve my ability to deliver reliable, automated, and scalable applications in real-world environments.
Set Up a Web App Using AWS and VS Code
Today, I’m starting Project 1 of the 7 Day DevOps Challenge, where Iʼll be setting the foundation for a CI/CD pipeline by launching and running a simple web app in the cloud. What I’m Trying to Do Today In this project, I’m going to: Launch an EC2 instance (a virtual server) on AWS. Connect to it remotely using VS Code and SSH.
Connect a GitHub Repo with AWS
Today, I'm setting up version control for my web application project using Git and GitHub. The goal is to connect my EC2-hosted project to a GitHub repository so I can track all changes, collaborate more easily, and prepare the groundwork for future CI/CD automation. I’ll be initializing Git in my project folder, linking it to a new remote repo on GitHub, and committing and pushing my existing code. This is a key step in managing my code more professionally and building out my DevOps skills.
Secure Packages with CodeArtifact
In this project, I will demonstrate how to set up and use AWS CodeArtifact to manage and secure Java dependencies for a web application. I'm doing this project to learn how to integrate a secure artifact repository into a CI/CD pipeline, ensure consistent dependency management across environments, and gain hands-on experience with AWS services such as EC2, IAM, and CodeArtifact. This project strengthens my understanding of DevOps best practices, particularly around package security, version control, and automated deployments.
Continuous Integration with CodeBuild
In this project, I will demonstrate how to set up Continuous Integration using AWS CodeBuild. I'm doing this project to learn how to automate the build and test process for my application every time code is pushed to a repository. This includes Creating and configuring a CodeBuild project from scratch. Connecting CodeBuild to a GitHub repository. Writing a `buildspec.yml` file to define the build and test steps. Running automated tests as part of the CI workflow. By doing this, Iʼll gain hands-on experience with one of the key components of a CI/CD pipeline, which is essential for delivering high-quality software faster and more reliably.
Deploy a Web App with CodeDeploy
In this project, I will demonstrate how to deploy a Java-based web application to an EC2 instance using AWS CodeDeploy. I'm doing this project to learn how to automate deployments as part of a CI/CD pipeline, minimize downtime during releases, and handle deployment failures using rollback strategies. This hands-on experience will strengthen my understanding of deployment automation and help me build production-ready DevOps skills using services like EC2, CodeDeploy, CodeBuild, CodeArtifact, and CloudFormation.
Infrastructure as Code with CloudFormation
In this project, I will demonstrate how to convert my entire CI/CD pipeline infrastructure into code using AWS CloudFormation. I'm doing this project to learn how to automate the provisioning of AWS resources like EC2 instances, CodeBuild projects, CodeDeploy deployment groups, and S3 buckets using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles. This approach not only helps eliminate manual setup errors but also ensures consistent, repeatable environments that can be deployed across multiple stages or accounts. Itʼs a crucial step toward mastering DevOps automation and working more efficiently in cloud-based production environments.

By completing this project, Iʼll gain hands-on experience with key AWS services like EC2, IAM, and CloudFormation, while learning how Kubernetes automates deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. This foundational step sets the stage for more advanced projects in container orchestration and cloud-native infrastructure.
Set Up Kubernetes Deployment
In this project, I will clone a backend application from GitHub, build a Docker image of it, push that image to Amazon ECR, and prepare it for deployment with Kubernetes** because this is a crucial step in modern cloud-native development. It helps ensure that applications are containerized, version-controlled, and ready to be deployed in a scalable and reliable Kubernetes environment using AWS services. This workflow mirrors real-world DevOps pipelines and strengthens my skills in containerization, CI/CD, and cloud orchestration.
Create Kubernetes Manifests
In this project, I will create Kubernetes manifest files because these files are essential for telling Kubernetes how to deploy and manage my backend application in a reliable and scalable way. By writing Deployment and Service manifests, I can ensure my app runs smoothly on Amazon EKS and is properly exposed to users.
Deploy Backend with Kubernetes
In this project, I will deploy the backend of an application on a Kubernetes cluster using Amazon EKS because this will allow me to manage, scale, and maintain the app efficiently in a cloud-native environment. By doing this, I will gain hands-on experience with Kubernetes deployment processes, including setting up the cluster, writing manifest files, and using kubectl to control the deployment, which are essential skills for modern cloud infrastructure and DevOps roles.
